Why do handymen have a minimum charge for small jobs?
Short answer
A minimum charge covers the essential costs of a professional service call beyond just the repair itself, including travel, insurance, and preparation. This ensures a licensed technician can handle your job properly, and it encourages bundling small repairs to provide you with the best value for a single visit.
The '5-Minute Job' Myth
When a door latch is off by a fraction of an inch, the fix itself can seem simple. However, for a professional service, that '5-minute' task is part of a larger 1 to 2 hour process. This includes dispatching, driving to your home in the Seattle area, finding parking, unloading specific tools, laying down protective coverings, doing the work, testing it, cleaning up, and processing payment. The minimum charge accounts for this entire professional process, not just the time spent with a screwdriver in hand.
What's Included in a Professional Service Call?
Our minimum charge ensures we can deliver a consistently high-quality and safe service. It covers the 'unseen' costs: Washington State L&I insurance for our technicians, general liability insurance to protect your home, fuel and vehicle upkeep, software for scheduling and invoicing, and ongoing training. It also means we can pay our skilled, background-checked employees a living wage. An unusually low price from an independent operator may mean they are skipping these crucial protections, which puts you, the homeowner, at risk.
Time & Materials vs. Flat Rate Pricing
Some companies offer a 'flat rate' for specific jobs, but this can be inefficient for small, varied repairs. We believe a time and materials model is more transparent. Our $580 half-day package provides up to four hours of labor. After that, work is billed at $145 per hour, plus the cost of materials. This model is ideal for creating a 'punch list' of items, like hanging a gallery wall, fixing a loose railing, adjusting a cabinet door, and replacing a worn-out doorknob all in one visit.
How to Maximize Your Handyman Visit
The best way to get value from a minimum charge is to stop thinking about just one task. Before you call, walk through your home with a notepad. Does a toilet handle jiggle? Is a piece of trim loose? Do you have pictures you've been meaning to hang? Combining these small jobs into a single, efficient visit is the most cost-effective way to hire a handyman and get your home back in perfect working order.
Why it happens
A 'five minute job,' like adjusting a single door that won't latch, is rarely just five minutes of business time. A professional handyman service has fixed costs for every visit. These include travel time and fuel to get to your home, general liability and workers' compensation insurance required in Washington, vehicle maintenance, and the time it takes for a skilled technician to properly load tools for the job, protect the work area in your home, perform the repair, and clean up afterward. The minimum charge ensures these operational costs are covered, allowing the business to employ qualified, background-checked professionals rather than cutting corners.
How to diagnose it
- 1Is the task a single, quick fix like adjusting one sticky door or replacing one light switch?
- 2Have you walked through your home and made a list of other small annoyances to create a 'punch list'?
- 3Consider the total time it would take you to research the fix, drive to the hardware store, buy tools and parts, and do the work yourself.
- 4Does a quoted price from another provider seem too low? Unusually low prices may indicate a lack of proper licensing or insurance, putting you at risk.
- 5Think about the value of your time. The minimum charge often costs less than spending your entire Saturday on frustrating home repairs.
