What is the cost for a small drywall repair?
Short answer
Most small drywall repairs fall under a handyman's minimum half-day rate, typically between $500 and $600. A simple patch for a doorknob hole or small stain can often be completed within our $580 minimum visit. The final price depends on the patch size, wall texture, and if painting is included.
What's Included in a Drywall Repair Quote?
A standard professional drywall repair includes several steps. First, we cut the damaged section into a clean square and install a new drywall patch, often with a wood backer for stability. Next, we apply fiberglass or paper tape to the seams and cover it with the first coat of joint compound. After that coat dries, we apply one or two more skim coats, sanding between each, to create a smooth, level surface. The final steps are matching the surrounding wall texture (like orange peel or knockdown) and, if requested, applying primer and paint.
Why Multiple Visits Are Necessary
Joint compound shrinks as it dries. Applying it too thickly or not allowing adequate drying time between coats will cause cracks and an uneven finish. A proper repair requires at least two visits: one for the patch, tape, and first coat of mud, and a second for sanding, final coating, and texture. A perfectly smooth, non-textured finish may even require a third visit for optimal results. These separate trips are the primary driver of labor costs.
Factors That Increase Repair Costs
Several factors can complicate a repair and increase the price. Ceiling work is more physically demanding and time-consuming than wall work. Matching complex or custom wall textures requires more skill and time than a standard orange peel. If the damage was caused by water, more drywall must be removed to ensure all damp material is gone and to check for mold. Finally, achieving a perfect paint match can add time and cost for color sampling and blending.
Handyman Minimum vs. Larger Projects
For one or two small patches, booking a handyman for a half-day is the most efficient method. At My House Spouse, our $580 minimum charge covers up to four hours of labor, which is plenty of time to address a patch and often other small tasks on your to-do list. For larger jobs, like replacing a full 4x8 sheet of drywall or repairing damage in multiple rooms, we would provide a flat-rate project quote that is more economical than an hourly rate.
Why it happens
Pricing for drywall repair is based almost entirely on labor time, not material costs. The key factor is the multiple visits required. Joint compound (mud) must dry completely between applications, a process that can't be rushed. A professional repair involves at least two, and often three, separate site visits to apply tape, multiple coats of mud, sand, apply texture, and finally, prime and paint. This multi-trip necessity is why even a small hole costs more than homeowners expect and is often bundled into a half-day service charge.
How to diagnose it
- 1Measure the height and width of the damaged area.
- 2Note the location of the damage, as ceiling repairs are more complex than wall repairs.
- 3Take a clear, well-lit photo of the wall from a slight angle to show the existing wall texture.
- 4Determine the cause of the damage, for instance, an impact versus a water stain, which may indicate a deeper issue.
- 5Decide if you need only the patch or if you also require primer and final paint matching.
- 6Count how many separate patches are needed throughout the house to see if they can be bundled into one visit.
DIY vs. professional
DIY-friendly if…
DIY is fine for filling small nail holes or repairing a crack with a simple spackle-and-sand job where a perfect texture match is not critical.
Call a pro when…
Hire a professional for any hole larger than your fist, all ceiling repairs, water-damaged drywall, or when you need a seamless, invisible texture and paint match.
