How much does drywall repair cost in the Seattle area?

Short answer

Small drywall repairs often fall under our minimum half-day handyman visit. Larger jobs are priced based on the number of trips, material layers, and finish level needed for a seamless look. A small patch might start at our $580 minimum, while repairing a larger ceiling section could be $1,500 or more.

Why a Small Hole Isn't a 15-Minute Fix

The main factor driving drywall repair cost is time, specifically the number of trips required. A professional repair is a multi-step process involving drying time. A single patch requires at least two, and often three, separate visits: one to cut, patch, and apply the first coat of mud; a second to sand and apply a finishing coat; and a third for final sanding, texturing, priming, and painting. This multi-trip reality is why even a small repair has a baseline cost.

Factors That Influence Your Quote

Several key variables affect the price of a drywall repair. The size of the damaged area is the most obvious factor. Location is also critical; ceiling repairs are more difficult and thus more expensive than wall repairs. The existing wall texture plays a huge role. Blending a repair into a custom hand-troweled texture is far more complex than finishing a smooth wall. Finally, the underlying cause of the damage can add cost, especially if water mitigation is needed first.

The Importance of Proper Finishing

The job isn't finished when the hole is filled. For a truly invisible repair, the patch must be carefully sanded, feathered into the surrounding wall, and then textured to match. After the texture is dry, a specialized PVA drywall primer is essential. This primer seals the porous joint compound so that the topcoat of paint absorbs evenly. Skipping this step results in a visible patch, known as 'flashing,' where the repaired area has a different sheen than the rest of the wall.

Bundling Repairs for Best Value

Because of the multi-trip nature of drywall work, it's most cost-effective to bundle repairs. If you have a hole from a doorknob, some stress cracks in a hallway, and a few nail pops in the living room, it's much more economical to have them all addressed at once. Our handyman service is structured around a half-day minimum ($580 for up to 4 hours of labor), which is often enough time to complete the first phase for several small to medium-sized patches throughout your home.

Why it happens

Drywall damage is a common part of homeownership. The most frequent causes are accidental impacts, like a doorknob hitting a wall or furniture being moved. Water damage is another major culprit, stemming from slow leaks in pipes, roofs, or windows, which create soft spots and stains. Finally, the normal settling of a house, especially with the seasonal expansion and contraction common in the Pacific Northwest, can lead to stress cracks and nail pops that require professional taping and finishing.

How to diagnose it

  1. 1Measure the length and width of the damaged area to understand its scale.
  2. 2Gently press on the drywall around the hole. If it feels soft, damp, or spongy, it indicates a likely water issue that must be addressed first.
  3. 3Note the location. Ceiling repairs are more complex and labor-intensive than wall repairs.
  4. 4Examine the wall's texture. A smooth finish is simpler to patch than a sprayed texture like orange peel or a custom hand texture, which requires skillful blending.
  5. 5Check if trim, outlets, or switches are involved, as these add complexity to the repair.
  6. 6Determine the cause of the hole. Damage from a plumbing or electrical repair may require coordination, while a simple impact hole is more straightforward.

DIY vs. professional

DIY-friendly if…

DIY is a good option for filling nail holes or patching a single hole smaller than a tennis ball using an all-in-one kit from a hardware store.

Call a pro when…

Call a professional for any repair larger than your fist, any water-damaged drywall, all ceiling repairs, or when you need to perfectly match an existing wall texture.

Cost expectations

$580–$1,800typical WA labor + materials

Pricing depends heavily on the number of site visits needed for mud to dry. A small patch starts at our $580 handyman minimum, while a multi-sheet job costs more.

What we see on Home Health Assessments

A Home Health Assessment can spot the early signs of drywall issues, like faint water stains or fine stress cracks near windows. Identifying these problems early can prevent a small patch job from turning into a major restoration project.
