Why is my washing machine shaking so violently on spin?

Short answer

A violently shaking washer is either unlevel, has a load unevenly distributed, or (on front-loaders) has never had its shipping bolts removed. Front-loaders shake worst when the four rear shipping bolts weren't taken out at install. Check for those first — they're marked in the manual and often overlooked.

Level first

Kill the spin cycle, put a bubble level on the top front-to-back and side-to-side. Adjust the four legs with a wrench until it's level. Even a small tilt causes major shake on spin.

Shipping bolts (front loaders)

Every front-loader ships with 3–4 large bolts securing the drum for transport. They MUST come out before use. If your washer has always shaken, look at the back — if the bolts are still there, that's your problem. Removal takes 5 minutes.

Balance the load

Wet towels and bedding balled up on one side cause imbalance and violent shake. Stop the cycle, redistribute, restart. Modern washers have auto-rebalance but it doesn't always catch it.
