Can a handyman install a dishwasher in Washington?
Short answer
Yes — a handyman can install a like-for-like dishwasher replacement: pull the old unit, disconnect the water supply and drain, slide the new unit in, and reconnect. What we can't do without a licensed electrician: hardwire a new circuit or upgrade the receptacle. Almost all replacements reuse the existing power connection, so this rarely comes up.
Standard replacement scope
Disconnect: water supply at the angle stop, drain line at the disposal or air gap, electrical at the receptacle or junction box under the sink. Level the new unit, adjust the anti-tip brackets, reconnect in reverse, run a test cycle. About 90 minutes.
When it gets bigger
First-time install (no existing dishwasher opening): needs cabinet mods and a new water/drain/electrical rough-in — bigger project, multi-trade. Same brand, new location: usually a licensed electrician plus a plumber. This is why we quote-first rather than blind-quote off a photo.
Common gotchas
Old brass ferrules on the water supply may not seal on a new fitting; we replace them proactively. Air gaps required by many local codes — verify with your city inspector for permit-triggering work. Panel-ready installs need the panel from the appliance manufacturer or a specific integration kit.
What we see on Home Health Assessments
Based on real experience across Snohomish and King County, appliances & fixtures issues like this are among the ones homeowners most often miss until they become expensive. Our Home Health Assessment catches them early — while they're still a maintenance item, not a repair.

Why does my garbage disposal hum but not spin?
A humming-but-not-spinning disposal is almost always jammed. There's a hex slot on the bottom of the disposal — insert the little Allen wrench (usually taped to the disposal or included with it) and turn it back and forth to free the flywheel. Then press the reset button on the bottom. If it runs, remove whatever caused the jam (usually a fruit pit, a bone, or a rubber band).

How do I find a hidden water leak in my house?
Turn off every fixture and appliance, then watch the small red "leak indicator" dial on your water meter for 10–15 minutes. If it moves, you have flow somewhere with everything off — that's a leak. Isolate by shutting off the main to the house and the water heater; the meter tells you if it's on the incoming side or inside.
